For those keeping track at home, Moby-Dick was his second-biggest flop, selling only 3,700 copies worldwide. Far and away his most successful book was his debut, Typee.

Melville’s worst-selling book, by the way, was MD's follow-up novel, Pierre—but the fact that around this time his publishers started a rumour that Melville was clinically insane probably also had something to do with it.
